Meetings

The Guild regularly meets on the 3rd Monday of each month at 7.15 p.m., in studio A at Neilson Park Creative Centre September thru June. The Centre is wheelchair accessible and there is handicapped parking near the entrance. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

Upon Arrival

Sign in at the membership table at the entrance of Studio A - visitors will get a visitor's name tag and members wearing their name tag will get a ticket for a fat quarter draw - SO REMEMBER TO WEAR YOUR NAME TAG - you know that quilters can never have enough fat quarters!

There is time before the meeting and at the halfway break to visit the Activity Tables.

  • Workshop Table - workshops that are held throughout the year provide you with the opportunity to learn new techniques or quilt patterns. Register and get your materials list here.
  • Block of the Month Table - For $2.00 you pick up pattern and fabric for this month's block. Hand in the finished block at the next meeting and you receive $1.00 Back and a ticket to draw for a chance to win all of the blocks for that month.
  • Comfort Quilt Table - Fabric that has been donated by individuals or companies will be available each month. You can return a completed quilt, or a quilt top to be layered and quilted by guild members. Layered quilts are also available for members who will quilt, tie and finish quilt edges. Comfort quilts are donated to various agencies, hospitals and individuals each year. Visit the Library located in Studio C - Members may borrow one pattern and video and up to three books which are due back at the next monthly meeting.

Please remember to bring your mug and return your library books.
The business part of the meeting starts by welcoming visitors and new members, announcements and reports from the executive, followed by "Show and Tell" where members display their latest projects. Next, a break for coffee and treats allows time to mingle. Following the break we have guest speakers, bee, a trunk show or slides or special event such as a potluck dinner.
The meetings are over around 9.45 p.m.
Visitors are always welcome at these meetings. NEW: Our visitor policy has now been changed to 1st visit is free and 2nd is $5 which includes light refreshments.

 Upcoming Meetings

For September 19, 2011
I have booked 3 terrific ladies from the Mississauga Quilters Guild. They have diverse styles, both in quilting and in speaking. They are Elaine MacDonald, Jane Sanders and Darlene Jenah.

October 17, 2011
Karen Wold is a practising lawyer, as well as a quilter She will speak to us about “Copyright, a Sampler for Quilters,” with a trunk show to help illustrate various topics and issues. I think this is a very relevant issue, especially now with many quilters designing their own quilts and artworks
.
November 21, 2011
Our speaker will be Kathy Wylie. Her award-winning quilts are gorgeous, and she’s having great success with her first book “Sewflakes.” You can check out her website www.kathykwylie.com/blog . I thoroughly enjoyed her presentation at MQG. She will also have books and patterns for sale.

December 19, 2011
We hold our Christmas Potluck meeting – good food, good friends, some fun – and prizes.

January 16, 2012
The new year will start out with Sandra Lowry’s presentation of her journey through quilting. We all love her outspoken wit.

February 13, 2012
This should be a bee meeting for the Comfort Quilt Committee.
I will continue to work on April and May, 2012. (We will not be having a meeting in March due to it being a Quilt Show year.)

Block of the Month - Old-Fashioned Nine Patch

This year the Block of the Month is completely different. We are doing the same block every month – the Nine Patch. There are already 40 people signed up, in 4 groups of 10. There are a few spaces available on a waiting list for one more group. Starting in September, you will each be responsible for making ten 5-inch Nine Patch blocks each month, using 2-inch strips. They must be 100% cotton, washed: no white, no solids, no batiks, and no modern neons - just old-fashioned colours with the dark in the centre. Members of the group will share one of their ten finished blocks with the other members of their group and keep one for themselves. At the last meeting in June, you will each have 100 different Nine Patch blocks with which you can make a quilt. Wow!
